Determination of four arsenic species in cigarette smoke by high performance liquid chromatography and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry

  • 摘要: In order to evaluate toxicological properties of arsenic in mainstream cigarette smoke,a high performance liquid chromatography and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometric(HPLC-ICP-MS) method was developed for the determination of four arsenic species, including As(Ⅲ), As(V), monomethylarsonic acid (MMA) and dimethylarsinic acid (DMA) in maistream cigarettes smoke. The extracting solvent was ammonium hydrogen phosphate (15 mmol·L-1, pH 6.0). The detection limits of the four arsenic species were between 0.15 and 0.26 μ g·L-1, the relative standard deviations(RSDs) were less than 15% and the recoveries were in the range of 78.0%-117.0%. The release of the four arsenic species in smoke was detemined by this method in selected commercial cigarettes. The primary arsenic species in mainstream cigarette smoke were As(III) and As (V) at levels of 8.20 to 34.2 ng·20 cig-1 for As(III), and 9.89 to 80.4 ng·20 cig-1 for As(V), respectively. Little DMA and MMA were found in the mainstream smoke of these cigarettes. The method was simple, fast, and qualified to study the levels of four arsenic species in mainstream cigarette smoke.
