Abstract: In the process of tipping paper cutting in a filter cigarette maker, the glue tends to buildup on knife edge, which results in ill cut or oblique paper sheet, moreover, manual knife lubricating and cleaning were laborsome, therefore an automatic lubricating and cleaning system was designed. The system consisted of three brushes rotating around a circle of Ø119 mm diameter under the control of an electric control system. There were three stations responsible for working, cleaning and lubricating, respectively, disposed along a circle and the feeding rates of scraper and brushes were adjustable. The results of application showed that: 1) The system could complete knife cleaning and lubricating, brush self-cleaning and lubricant application automatically, and was adaptive for PASSIM and PROTOS cigarette makers. 2) After applying the lubricating and cleaning system to a PASSIM cigarette maker, the amount of cigarettes with defective tipping paper reduced by 78.2 cig./d, the amount of defective cigarettes with glue bits reduced by 1.2 cig./d; 120 min/d was saved by reducing brush replacement, the potential safety risks involved in manual operation were eliminated, and the machine efficiency was promoted effectively.
