Abstract: To provide a reference information for the development of oral smokeless tobacco products (STPs), the patents related to oral STPs were statistically and technically analyzed, covering application during 1985- 2015 and published by the State Intellectual Property Office. The results showed that: 1) The number of oral STP patent application raised continuously since 2008, the applicants were from tobacco enterprises at home and abroad. 2) The majority of oral STP patents related to raw material formula, preparation methods and product forms; and those related to means of use, additives and product packaging were the next most popular. 3) The future research should focus on blending technology, package material of oral STP (in buccal cavity), nicotine release efficiency promotion, nicotine release speed, matrix development and harmful component reduction in order to improve the sensory quality of oral STPs.
