Abstract:
In order to study the puff-by-puff release of flavors from breakable capsules in cigarette smoke, breakable capsules at three different sizes, including small (particle size: 2.8 mm), medium (particle size: 3.0 mm) and large sizes (particle size: 3.5 mm) were planted into the filters of cigarettes with a circumference of 24.5 mm, slim cigarettes with a circumference of 20.0 mm, superslim cigarettes with a circumference of 17.0 mm, separately. The puff-by-puff releases of menthol,
cis-citral and
trans-citral from the breakable capsules were examined. The results showed that: 1) With the different sized breakable capsules, the puff-by-puff release of flavor into cigarette mainstream smoke increased with the increase of amount of flavor loaded in the breakable capsules. 2) When the small capsules were planted into the filters of cigarettes of different circumferences, the puff-by-puff release of flavor to cigarette smoke decreased with the increasing linear velocity of cigarette smoke. 3) The flavor releases in the first puff from the different circumferential conventional and slim cigarettes were lower, and the puff-by-puff releases of flavor were stable into the smoke of superslim cigarettes. 4) The filter temperature had a compensatory effect on the release of flavor in large breakable capsules due to its larger loading amount.
