Abstract: In order to accurately understand the current status and forecast research progress and development trend on pouched oral tobacco products in China, patents related to pouched oral tobacco products published by the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO)from 1985 to 2018 were searched and statistically analyzed. The results showed that:1) During 1985-2018, SIPO published 154 patents related to pouched oral tobacco products, of which 124 were inventions, 21 were utility models and 9 were appearance designs. 2)From 1985 to 2007, the annual patent applications for pouched oral tobacco products were at the initial stage. Since 2008, the number of related patent applications increased significantly and entered a period of rapid growth. Since then, great progress on patent applications had been made by domestic tobacco industry. 3)Among the foreign tobacco companies, Reynolds American Tobacco Company had the largest number of patent applications, followed by Philip Morris Tobacco Company. Among the domestic patent applicants, Zhengzhou Tobacco Research Institute of CNTC and China Tobacco Yunnan Industrial Limited Corporation were the top two and most of their patents were inventions. 4)At the present, the technological development of pouched oral tobacco products was relatively mature. The research hotspots mainly focused on product formulation, preparation technology and packaging technology. Some progress could be noted in slow-release technology, ripening technology and forming technology as well.
