Abstract:
In order to study the transfer behavior of limonene and menthol in breakable capsules of cigarette, conventional kingsize and slim cigarette samples with breakable capsules of different sizes in different locations of cigarette filters were designed and prepared, and the transfer behavior of limonene and menthol in mainstream smoke were analyzed by ethanol extraction and GC/MS method. The results showed that: 1) With the increase of capsule diameter, the migration rates of limonene and menthol to the particulate matters in mainstream cigarette smoke increased, while their retention rates by filter decreased. 2) With the increase of the distance between the capsules and the mouth end of cigarette, the migration rates of limonene and menthol to the particulate matters in mainstream cigarette smoke decreased, while their retention rates by filter increased. 3) The migration rates of limonene and menthol to the particulate matters in mainstream smoke of slim cigarettes were higher, while their retention rates by filter were lower than those of conventional kingsize cigarettes. 4) The correlation analysis indicated that the diameter of breakable capsule extremely significantly positively correlated to the migration rates of limonene and menthol to the particulate matters in mainstream cigarette smoke, while extremely significantly negatively correlated to their retention rates by filter. The distance to mouth end of a breakable capsule in filter significantly negatively correlated to the migration rates of limonene and menthol to the particulate matters in mainstream cigarette smoke, while significantly positively correlated to their retention rates by filter.
