Abstract:
In order to improve quality, reconstituted tobacco was coated with a solution containing CaCO
3 on its basic sheet. The relative surface calcium element content and surface micro-structure of the reconstituted tobacco were characterized with EDS and SEM and its physical properties, mainstream smoke index and sensory quality were determined and analyzed. The results indicated that the total calcium content and relative surface calcium content in reconstituted tobacco HS-4 coated with a solution containing CaCO
3 of 10% were close to those in Mauduit reconstituted tobacco and higher than those in TS reconstituted tobacco; the surface micro-structure of HS-4 was similar to that of Mauduit sample. Comparing with TS, the deliveries of tar and CO in mainstream smoke of HS-4 reduced by 9.1% and 17.5%, respectively; while their sensory quality differed slightly.
