Influence of cigarette paper parameters on the release of routine chemical components in mainstream smoke of slim cigarette

  • To investigate the relationships of cigarette paper parameters (grammage, air permeability, K/Na ratio, hemp pulp content, ash content and burn promoter content) with the releases of routine chemical components in mainstream smoke of slim cigarettes, slim cigarette samples were designed and manufactured according to the performance features of imported and domestic slim cigarette paper. The influences of cigarette paper parameters on the releases of routine components in mainstream smoke were compared with those of kingsized cigarettes. The results showed that:1) The air permeability, burn promoter content and K/Na ratio showed a strong negative correlation to the releases of tar, nicotine and CO in mainstream smoke. At the same increasing extent of burn promoter content and K/Na ratio, the reduction rate of tar, nicotine, and CO in mainstream smoke were higher than those of kingsized cigarettes. A contrary trend was observed at the same increasing extent by paper air permeability. 2) Paper grammage negatively correlated to tar and nicotine releases, positively correlated to CO release. At the same increasing extent of paper grammage, the reduction rates of tar and nicotine levels in mainstream smoke were higher than those of kingsized cigarettes, while the reduction rate of CO release was basically the same as that of kingsized cigarettes. 3) The hemp pulp content and ash content in the paper negatively correlated to the tar release in mainstream smoke to a certain extent, and did not correlated to nicotine and CO releases. The hemp pulp content and ash content in kingsized cigarette paper had no obvious influences on the releases of routine chemical components in mainstream smoke of kingsized cigarette.
