Effects of device power and puffing volume on heavy metal emissions in e-cigarette aerosols

  • To study the effects of device power and puffing volume on selected heavy metal emissions in e-cigarette aerosols, six heavy metals (Cr, Ni, Cu, As, Cd and Pb) and their concentrations in the aerosols of e-cigarettes at different device powers and puffing volumes were analyzed by using refillable atomizers and self-prepared e-liquids. The results showed that:1) As and Cd were not detected in the aerosols. 2) Device power had significant effects on the Cr, Ni and Cu emissions in the aerosols, however no obvious effect was observed for Pb. 3) Puffing volume had significant effects on the Cr, Cu and Pb emissions in the aerosols, and significant effects were observed for Ni when puffing volume was larger than 75 mL. 4) Device power had more significant effects on Ni and Cu emissions in the aerosols than puffing volume, however, the reverse was true for Cr and Pb emissions in the aerosols.
