Analyzing chemical components in caprylic capric triglycerides in breakable capsule solvents using GC-FID and HPLC-ELSD

  • In order to analyze the main chemical components in breakable capsule solvents, a gas chromatography-flame ionization detector (GC-FID) method and a high performance liquid chromatography-evaporative light scattering detector (HPLC-ELSD) method were developed. The main chemical components in caprylic capric triglycerides in breakable capsules in 9 commercial cigarettes were analyzed and the performance parameters of GC-FID and HPLC-ELSD methods were compared. The results showed that: 1) Both methods exhibited lower detection limits, higher repeatability and good linear correlation (R2>0.999) in their corresponding measurement ranges. Both could be applied to qualitatively and quantitatively detect the main components in caprylic capric triglycerides in breakable capsule solvent. 2) The GC-FID method had lower detection limits (0.324-1.40 μg/mL), wider linear range, more suitable spiked recoveries (90.8±1.8)%-(98.3±3.7)% and less sample consumption. The HPLC-ELSD method presented higher repeatability and stability (RSD < 1%). 3) The total amount and component concentrations of caprylic capric triglycerides were different in the breakable capsule solvents in the tested commercial cigarettes.
