Analysis on cigarette smokers' saliva components by closed loop stripping

  • To study the chemical components in saliva of cigarette smokers, a closed loop stripping analysis (CLSA)-thermal desorption-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method was established. Saliva samples from smokers of different types of cigarettes were collected with cotton balls via chewing action and then analyzed by the established method. The results showed that: 1) Compared with mainstream cigarette smoke, the composition and proportions of different chemical components in the saliva samples changed greatly, in which the most notable components were cyclopentanones, pyrazines, lactones and triacetin. The peak area ratio between cyclopentanones/pyrazines compounds and nicotine in the saliva samples increased by 10-30 times, while the ratio of lactones/triacetin and nicotine decreased by more than 95%. 2) The peak areas of main components in the saliva samples of different types of cigarettes were significantly different, and the components with the greatest differences were pyridines, pyrazines, cyclopentenones and furans compounds. The peak areas of pyridines and pyrazines compounds in the saliva samples from the smokers smoking international Virginia type and blended type cigarettes were higher than those smoking Chinese style Virginia type cigarettes, while the peak areas of cyclopentenones and furans compounds were on the contrary.
