Effects of Cigarette Paper on Deliveries of Seven Harmful Components in Mainstream Cigarette Smoke

Abstract
In order to reduce the harm of smoking to human health, the effects of permeability and basis weight of and additives in cigarette paper on the contents of seven harmful components in mainstream cigarette smoke were investigated. The results showed that:1) With the increase of cigarette paper permeability, the contents of BaP,NH3,phenol,CO and HCN in smoke and cigarette hazard index decreased, while the contents of 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone(NNK) and crotonaldehyde changed little;2) With the increase of basis weight of cigarette paper, the CO and HCN contents in smoke, and cigarette hazard index increased, while the contents of crotonaldehyde,BaP,NNK,NH3 and phenol did not change significantly;3) With the increase of addition amounts of potassium carboxylate or the mixture of potassium and sodium carboxylates in cigarette paper, the contents of CO,HCN,BaP,NH3,and phenol in smoke and cigarette hazard index decreased slightly, while NNK and crotonaldehyde contents changed little;4) Potassium carboxylate decreased CO,HCN,BaP,NH3 and phenol contents, and cigarette hazard index more effectively than the mixture of potassium and sodium carboxylates. It was concluded that CO,HCN,BaP,NH3 and phenol and cigarette hazard index could be decreased to a certain extent by properly increasing permeability, decreasing basis weight of cigarette paper, and increasing the addition amounts of potassium carboxylate in cigarette paper.
