Determination of Residual Vinyl Acetate in Polyvinyl Acetate Emulsion Adhesives for Cigarette with Static Headspace-Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry

  • A method for determining the residual vinyl acetate in polyvinyl acetate emulsion adhesive for cigarette by static headspace-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (SHS-GC/MS) with internal standard was developed. The adhesive sample was treated at 80℃ for 15 min with 2-hexanone as internal standard, the extract was separated by a HP-INNOWAX column, determined by MS and quantified by the internal standard under selected ion monitoring (SIM) mode. The results showed that the recoveries of the method ranged from 104% to 107% with the relative standard deviation (RSD) of 2.5 to 4.9% and the limit of detection of 0.63 mg/kg. The method is accurate, simple, rapid, and suitable for the analysis of residual vinyl acetate in cigarette emulsion adhesives.
